Today we received a visit from Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mike O’Toole, US Army. He is the cousin of Dick Stuart, who survived the crash of Halifax DK259 at the Kwinkelerweg in Boekelo on September 29, 1943. Mike was accompanied by his wife, mother and Dutch friends John and Chiara. Ronnie and I started our story in the middle of Boekelo, where Dick Stuart was looking for shelter with the Boevink family. After this we visited the monument. From here it was a short walk to the spot in the woods where the bomber crashed in 1943. It is a special feeling to stand on the spot where the bomber crashed. Finally, we visited the graves of the two crew members who died, Bertram Scudder and Bill Bellinger.
